How To Save Fuel And Feel Good: The Power Of Lincoln’s PHEV Technology

Lincoln cars are synonymous with luxury and power, with the range offering the last word in high-end comforts and advanced technology. And while the company may be best known for their high-performance gas-powered SUVs, they also offer a selection of plug-in hybrid models that provide all the traditional Lincoln benefits alongside electric power, low emissions, and excellent fuel economy.

There are two main plug-in hybrid models in the 2022 Lincoln lineup, the Aviator and the Corsair, and here's what you can expect from a test drive of either model.

Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring Plug-In Hybrid: Powertrain and Performance

The Lincoln Aviator is a mid-size SUV that packs all the luxury of its Lincoln Navigator sibling into a more compact and sporty frame. The hybrid version gains the label Aviator Grand Touring and provides a reassuringly powerful take on electric vehicle technology.

The powertrain is an excellent example of the high-end plug-in hybrid approach, combining a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 gas engine with a 100 horsepower electric motor to give a combined output of 494 horsepower and 630lb-ft of torque. All that power is passed through a silky ten-speed automatic transmission to intelligent all-wheel drive as standard, resulting in confident performance married to agile handling.

The Aviator Grand Touring can be run in gas-only, hybrid, and electric-only modes, with the all-electric option providing up to 28km of driving with zero emissions. However, the sheer power of the combined output means most people will prefer to engage one of the mixed driving modes on offer, with settings available for different balances of performance and economy. And lastly for the powertrain, the Aviator Grand Touring offers an attractive highway fuel economy of 9.4L / 100km, a frugal figure for an SUV of this size and power.

Aviator Interior

The Aviator's spacious cabin can seat up to seven in comfort, although when the optional second-row captain's chairs are installed the capacity drops to six. The selection of infotainment technology in the cabin is generous, based around a 12.3" digital instrument cluster backed up by a 10.1" touchscreen display. All the high-end tech features you'd expect from a Lincoln car are available, with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hotspot facility provided as standard. And for audiophile-quality sounds on the move, the optional premium sound system boasts a staggering 28 speakers to deliver full 3D audio throughout the cabin.

Aviator Safety Systems

Lastly for the Aviator, the five-star scores in crash tests are supported by a slew of advanced safety technologies, with highlights including forward collision warnings with automatic emergency braking, lane keep and lane centering assist, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring Plug-In Hybrid: Powertrain and Performance

If the performance level of the Aviator is too high for your needs, the Corsair Grand Touring offers plug-in hybrid technology that's more closely focused on fuel economy and everyday convenience. Built around a 2.5L inline-four gas engine paired with dual electric motors, the Corsair delivers a highly respectable 266 horsepower, fed through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to all-wheel drive as standard.

The combination provides speedy acceleration and confident power on the highway, with an estimated fuel economy as impressive as 3.0L / 100km in mixed gas-electric mode, or 7.1L / 100km in gas-only. With a full battery charge, the Corsair provides up to 45km of all-electric driving range, with an estimated full-recharge time of around four hours on a Level 2 240V charging station.

Corsair Interior

As a smaller SUV than the Aviator, the Corsair has a maximum passenger capacity of five, although the legroom is generous in both rows. Essential driving information is delivered by a 12.3" digital instrument cluster as standard, with a head-up display available as an option.

Infotainment is handled by an 8" color touchscreen, with extra control options offered by a pair of mini-joysticks sitting on the steering wheel. Many other standard interior features contribute to the upscale feel of the Corsair, with key highlights including ambient lighting, active noise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, and optional 24-way power seat adjustment.

Lincoln Corsair Safety

Just like the Aviator, the Corsair is supplied with an extensive suite of advanced safety systems as standard. Pre-collision assist with automated braking can reduce or avoid collision impacts, while blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts provide extra safety from unseen vehicles. A lane keep system helps avoid incidents when driving on longer highway journeys, while the safety section is rounded off with valuable extras including automatic high beams, auto-dimming side mirrors, and a full set of airbags throughout the cabin.
